Three decades riding the photonic crystal fiber wave: an interview with Prof. Philip Russell
Date: 2024/10/11
Reported by: Hui Que

In the latest interview of "Advanced Photonics", Professor Zhang Long from the Chinese Academy of Sciences had a deep conversation with Professor Russell, the inventor of photonic crystal fibers (PCF). Professor Russell revealed the development process of this revolutionary technology: by constructing a precise air hole array within an optical fiber thinner than a hair, the breakthrough of "guiding light in the air" was achieved. This technology not only promoted the development of ultra-fast lasers and optical communication technologies, but also contributed to the Nobel Prize research.

Currently, Professor Russell has established the Russell Centre for Advanced Lightwave Science in Hangzhou, which is developing the next generation of optical technologies. He encourages young researchers: "Innovation stems from questioning and imagination." The full interview can be found in the journal (https://doi.org/10.1117/1.AP.6.6.060501).
